I deliberately chose October 16 as the date to attend the Harry Styles residency at Madison Square Garden, knowing it was the second anniversary of Liam Payne’s death.

As a longtime One Direction fan, I knew there was a chance there would be a special moment that could carry a different meaning for me. Harry’s residency at the New York venue had been running since August as part of his Together, Together tour, so I had been patient when choosing my show.

I hoped there might be a moment dedicated to Liam, but I also knew there was no guarantee. I just wanted to be there on a day that meant something to so many people who had also been longtime fans of One Direction. Thankfully, I was not disappointed. In fact, what happened was something I could never have predicted. The show came as new details in Liam's autopsy were revealed.

During the show, Harry took a moment to speak to the crowd, as he often does during the part of his set dedicated to chatting with fans and sharing messages about kindness, looking after one another, and appreciating the people around us.

I knew something special might be coming when he mentioned he had first played at Madison Square Garden at just 18 years old.

Then, Harry addressed the date and the loss that had brought so many memories back for fans. “I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me…And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends…I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other.”

As a longtime Directioner, I already was hoping Harry might perform one of the band’s songs in Liam’s honor. But then he announced something I had never expected. “There are so many people who have touched my life in such special ways that I wouldn’t be here without. I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right.”

Harry introduced the unreleased song as What Is Enough before accompanying himself on guitar and beginning a gentle acoustic performance. The lyrics included the lines, “I’m not wise enough/But I wrote you a letter just to burn it up/And watch it rise like you’re in the sky.”

I immediately burst into tears and grabbed onto my best friend. I had gone into the show hoping for a moment that would acknowledge Liam, but hearing Harry perform a song he had written for his friend was something else entirely.

All I could think about was myself as a young girl hearing One Direction for the first time. I remembered discovering how exciting it was to be a fan, to have a group of people who understood why a band could mean so much to you, and to become part of a community built around that shared love.

Being a Directioner was never just about the music. It was about the memories attached to it, the friendships formed through it, and the feeling of growing up alongside five people whose songs became the soundtrack to so many moments in our lives.

That is what made Harry’s performance so personal. It was not simply a tribute to Liam or a surprise song for the audience. It felt like a reminder of the connections music creates and how they can stay with us long after the moment has passed.

The song itself was beautiful and heartbreaking. Its quiet melody gave the lyrics room to sink in, and the fact that Harry had written it in the aftermath of losing his friend made the performance even more meaningful.

I had expected to feel emotional during the show, especially given the significance of the date. I had not expected to be standing in a sold-out arena listening to Harry share something so personal with thousands of people as we honored the memory of Liam. Then, just when I thought I couldn't get more emotional, Harry went straight into Sign of the Times.

The show comes two years after Liam died on October 16, 2024, aged 31, after falling from a balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His death sent shockwaves through the music world, particularly among the fans who had followed One Direction since the group formed in 2010.

Harry and Liam were part of the boy band alongside Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The group quickly rose to international stardom before going on hiatus in 2016, but their music continues to connect fans around the world.

Harry is continuing his Together, Together residency at the venue through October 31. While I had hoped my chosen date might include a tribute to Liam, I never imagined I would hear an unreleased and unrecorded song written by Harry in the wake of his old friend's death, making it a moment I will cherish forever.
