What do you believe?

Since it’s 2018 publication date, Colleen Hoover’s Verityhas created a huge debate among readers regarding its shocking ending. And the final scene in the film adaptation, which hit theaters on Friday, brings up the same question. Are you Team Letter or Team Manuscript?

“I want it to be up to the audience,” Josh Hartnett, who plays Jeremy, tells Entertainment Weekly about the film’s final scene. “Not to be evasive, but I really want them to have a debate afterward. That’s what’s so great about this.”

Hartnett praises the “ambiguity” of the movie’s ending as he continues. “I think it’s a good, fun thing to fight about,” the Pearl Harbor star adds. “It’s not like the other things that we fight about these days.”

Anne Hathaway, who plays the titular Verity, adds, “We’re all team debate.”

The movie follows the story of failing author, Lowen (Dakota Johnson), who gets the opportunity to continue bestselling writer Verity Crawford’s highly successful book series. What Lowen doesn’t know is that Verity is completely incapacitated following an accident. With tons of questions and not a lot of answers, Lowen starts to sort through Verity’s life work. What she discovers is an unpublished manuscript revealing that Verity hated being a mother and murdered her daughter.

Lowen eventually discovers that Verity is faking her entire illness and alerts Jeremy to what his wife has done. Jeremy, in a fit of rage, murders Verity. Months later, he and Lowen start a beautiful life together, selling the house where Verity died. Upon moving out, Lowen discovers a letter hidden in the floorboards which reveals Verity’s memoir was just a writing exercise and none of it was real.

While Hathaway wants moviegoers to debate the ending, she has a strong opinion about the truth.

“Personally, I’m Team Letter. I don’t trust Lowen,” she tells EW, with Johnson revealing that she doesn’t trust Lowen either. Hathaway continues, “I think the writing is so heightened that, to me, there’s a performative aspect to the manuscript. I always read the letter as being —she’s very careful. She’s very carefully explaining things.”

Verity author Hoover also weighs in on the debate, revealing to EW that she feels differently now than when the book first came out.

“I annotated the book for Kindle, and it was the first reread I’ve really done,” she explains. “My opinion changed, and I was so surprised, especially as the person who wrote the book and was in the head of Lowen.”

Verity is in theaters now.
