Speaking in a panel discussion moderated by PEOPLE executive editor Breanne L. Heldman at 90s Con in Hartford, Conn. on Friday, Oct. 16, the actors reminisced about the show and shared what their lives have been like since.
Angela Watson, who played Karen Foster, shared that, following the success of the show, she went “AWOL.”
“So, for 20 years I was just kind of lost out there,” Watson, 50, shared. “Didn’t see anybody, just went AWOL.”
Later, she moved to Florida to be near her parents and got back into acting.

“Actually, I kind of did it backwards because most actors get into theater first,” she said, “and I did commercials and sitcoms, and now we’re doing theater down in Florida.”
She continued: “Yeah, and also my husband and I, we met in acting class in Los Angeles, so we’re like, ‘Okay, we’re in Florida, what should we do? Maybe we should act like realtors, right?’ So, we have. We have been [working as realtors], so that’s been fun with him as well.”

Sasha Mitchell, who played Cody Lambert, changed career paths to work as a welder.“I’m back to being a welder and started making buildings,” the 59-year-old said. “I’ve been a structural welder forever. And then also if it rains, you’re inside, so I started working on computers and building networks and servers.”
Christopher Castile, meanwhile, began working as a teacher post-Step by Step, on which he played Mark Foster.“I think I’ve always been a teacher in some capacity, having a younger sibling and bossing them around and telling them what to do, et cetera,” Castile,46, said. “I’ve always liked explaining things to people, and it’s fun when you learn how something works, and just kind of want to share like, ‘Hey, I just learned how this cool thing works, and I want to just tell people how to do it.’”
He continued: “Being on Step by Step, being one of the younger [actors], it was the opposite. It was: I’m the student and I’m watching those who are older than me and better than me and more experienced — watching them, and then they modeled for me how to teach. So, teaching seems like a pretty obvious choice.”

Elsewhere in the panel, Duffy, 77, remembered Somers, who died on Oct. 15, 2023, just before her 77th birthday.
“I left Dallas, and two weeks later I went into the meeting to meet Suzanne Somers, and I looked at her, and I went, ‘Oh my God, that’s my new Larry Hagman,’” he joked. “And so she was that for the next seven years, my best friend.”
