After a decade-long hiatus, Gwyneth Paltrow returned to the Oscars last night. Paltrow attended as both a presenter and as part of the ensemble of Best Picture nominee Marty Supreme (she plays movie star Kay Stone in the film), and for the evening, she wore a custom Giorgio Armani Privé ivory silk strapless gown and Tiffany & Co. jewelry.
Paltrow won Best Actress in 1999, wearing a bubblegum pink Ralph Lauren ballgown. “Once I won the Oscar, it put me into a bit of an identity crisis, because if you win the biggest prize, like what are you supposed to do? And where are you supposed to go?” Paltrow said in 2023. “It was hard the amount of attention that you receive on a night like that and the weeks following, it’s so disorienting. And frankly, really unhealthy. I was like, ‘This is crazy. I don’t know what to do, I don’t know which way is up.’ It was a lot. Not that I would give it back or anything, it was an amazing experience, but it kind of called a lot of things into question for me.”
Here, take a look back at her Oscars fashion through the years:

She returned the following year in a more minimalist, beaded dress from Calvin Klein. “The Calvin Klein is an okay dress but not Oscars material. I chose it because I wanted to disappear that year,” she would say years later.

For the 2002 Oscars, Paltrow wore an Alexander McQueen ballgown. “There were a few issues; I still love the dress itself but I should have worn a bra and I should have just had simple beachy hair and less makeup,” she later shared. “Then, it would have worked as I wanted it to – a little bit of punk at the Oscars.”

At the 2011 Oscars, Paltrow performed “Coming Home” from her film Country Strong; on the red carpet, she wore a gown from Calvin Klein Collection and Louis Vuitton jewelry.

She chose a white, caped Tom Ford gown (and Anna Hu jewelry) at the 2012 Oscars.
“I think putting Gwyneth in that white, caped Tom Ford gown for the 2012 Oscars really made a huge impact on the fashion industry,” her stylist Elizabeth Saltzman later said. “It was the first time people saw Tom Ford’s eponymous line. Before that moment, red-carpet dressing was all about tulle, sparkles and diamonds – that clean, minimalist silhouette was totally new, and I think we’re still feeling the ripple effects from that look.”
