Reese Witherspoon gives update on dad’s health after emergency

Reese Witherspoon reacted to the news of her father’s hospitalization on Instagram.

She also shared an update on her dad’s health.

“Thank you to everyone who reached out. It means the world to our family,” she wrote.

Reese Witherspoon is sharing an update on her father’s health.

Following reports that the Sweet Home Alabama star’s father, Dr. John Witherspoon, was hospitalized, the actress said that her dad is on the mend in a post shared to her Instagram Stories on Friday.

“Earlier today, several outlets reported that my dad was taken to the hospital after a fall,” she wrote. “I want to let everyone know that he is fine now. He is being taken care of by wonderful doctors and nurses.”

Reese added, “Thank you to everyone who reached out. It means the world to our family.”

PEOPLE reported that the Nashville Metro Emergency Communications received a call about an unconscious man at 4 p.m. local time on Friday, and that he was taken to a nearby hospital.

John is an otolaryngologist, a doctor specializing in conditions affecting the ears, nose, and throat. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed as a lieutenant colonel in Wiesbaden, Germany, which meant that Reese spent the first four years of her life with her family in Europe.

John met Reese’s mother, Betty, when they were both medical students at the University of Tennessee. They separated in 1996, but had seemingly reconciled by 2018. “He has moved back in with me,” Betty told Woman’s Day. “I’m still married, we have been for 48 years. It’s been quite a while. I don’t really know when we got back together.”

Reese has not appeared on screen thus far in 2026, but has maintained a busy schedule as an executive producer. She shepherded the production of Elle, Prime Video’s prequel TV show about a young version of her Legally Blonde heroine Elle Woods, now played by Lexi Minetree.

Reese also executive produced the new Apple TV series Lucky, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a con woman on the run. She also executive produced another Apple TV series The Last Thing He Told Me, which stars Jennifer Garner as a woman searching for her missing husband. The show premiered its second season in February.

The actress is set to return to The Morning Show on Apple TV in 2027. The series, which marked one of the streamer’s first two original dramas when it launched in 2019, recently revealed that its forthcoming fifth season will mark the end of the show.
