Princess Margaret’s grandson Samuel Chatto is engaged after proposing to his girlfriend Eleanor Ekserdijian.
The ceramic artist announced the news with a close-up photo of the unusual engagement ring on July 13.
Chatto and Ekserdijian have been romantically linked since 2021.
As Princess Margaret’s grandson Samuel Chatto announced his engagement to girlfriend Eleanor Ekserdjian on July 13, he also shared a glimpse of the tradition-breaking handmade ring that he presented to pop the question.

The 29-year-old ceramic artist—whose parents are Lady Sarah Chatto and actor Daniel Chatto—unveiled the rare engagement ring in a black-and-white Instagram carousel. “I’m really delighted to say that Ellie and I are engaged. And we couldn’t be happier,” Chatto captioned the photo dump, revealing that he proposed “with a porcelain ring” he made himself.
In a close-up image, photographed by Huseyin Ovayolu, Ekserdijan could be seen wearing a light-colored dress shirt as she displayed the ceramic jewel, which features a smooth band and a textured abstract design at the top with no diamonds or other gemstones.

Jeweler Jessica Flinn-Allen uncovered the special meaning behind the “very rare” design in an interview with Hello! Magazine, sharing, “Sam’s choice to make his fiancée’s non-traditional engagement ring himself shows a level of commitment and creativity that is really special.”

She also emphasized the unexpected choice to use porcelain, explaining, “Not only is the material a rarity in jewelry, but the style and texture is incredibly unique and could hold special meaning to the newly-engaged couple, adding that extra special touch.”
Flinn-Allen also noted that the material itself could have a romantic hidden meaning. “The use of porcelain here symbolizes resilience and long-lasting love, mimicking the properties of the material itself,” she added.

Chatto’s decision to forego a traditional diamond ring aligns with other immediate family members, as both his mom Sarah and his grandmother Margaret opted for colorful gemstones. Margaret wore a ruby ring clustered with diamonds in a floral design that looked like a rose (a nod to her middle name), while Sarah reportedly has an “an early 19th-century diamond cluster, with table-cut stones, set in silver and surrounded by a red-gold shank chased with roses,” per Express.
Chatto, who met Ekserdjian, a fellow artist, while studying at the University of Edinburgh, has been dating her since 2021. While the couple is notoriously private, Queen Elizabeth’s grandnephew broke royal protocol when he invited his then-girlfriend to the royal family’s Sandringham Christmas walk in 2024—a rule previously flouted by Prince Harry in 2017 when he brought Meghan Markle as his plus-one to the highly-photographed event.
