Pamela Anderson says beauty is subjective and believes true beauty comes from inner radiance

The actress has embraced a mostly makeup-free lifestyle since appearing barefaced at Paris Fashion Week in 2023

Pamela Anderson has her own thoughts on the idea of beauty.

The Last Showgirl actress, 59, tells PEOPLE that the concept of beauty is “so subjective,” but she has ideas on what it looks like to her.

“When I think about beauty, I think of ancient beauty,” Anderson tells PEOPLE while chatting about her beauty brand Sonsie’s latest launch, adding that the idea of beauty now is “so tailor-made to what’s being fed to us.”

Anderson, who has been largely makeup-free for years now but still dabbles in glam here and there, says she tries to “experiment” with different looks.

“I really put the blinders on for what’s going on around me, and what do I love? What do I want to do? It’s not necessarily about being pretty. Beauty, I think, is more of an inner radiance,” she says.

“I will not be told what beautiful is,” Anderson states. “I have my own version of beauty, and it’s ageless. And it’s not comparative to other people.”

The actress and mom of two has been living her mostly makeup-free lifestyle since 2023, when she showed up to Paris Fashion Week barefaced. She told Elle in August that year that after her longtime makeup artist, Alexis Vogel, died in 2019, wearing makeup just didn’t feel right anymore.

“She was the best,” she told the outlet. “And since then, I just felt, without Alexis, it’s just better for me not to wear makeup.”

She had no idea, though, that her decision to publicly forgo makeup at high-profile events would be such a moment.

“I don’t know, something just kind of came over me and I was dressing in these beautiful clothes and I thought, ‘I don’t want to compete with the clothes,’” the Baywatch star told Vogue France amid Paris Fashion Week in 2023. “I’m not trying to be the prettiest girl in the room. I feel like it’s just freedom. It’s a release.”

She tells PEOPLE it feels a bit “rebellious” to buck the trends and not wear makeup. She’d rather just be comfortable and wear whatever she feels like.

“I think we’re really hard on ourselves,” she says. “With stylists and glam teams and all these kinds of things, they all have their ideas and their mood boards. I want to get my own mood board. I am my own mood board. So I think this is all very much connected.”

In an interview with The Sunday Timespublished in November 2024, Anderson also spoke about her ever-changing beauty habits and what it meant to her to connect with people over it.

“I didn’t realize it was going to start all of this, all these people really relating to me,” she shared. “It’s a great message — we are good enough just the way we are. I have to remind myself of that every day.”

Anderson may still mostly be keeping to her makeup-free life, but she does love to mix it up with some glam here and there. A swipe of mascara is her perfect pairing with the Sonsie Basic Balm for a light, everyday look.

For events and red carpets, she has amped up her look subtly in recent months, wearing bold eyeliner and big lashes, but still prefers a fresh face while letting her clothes — and jewels — shine.
