- Michelle Yeoh said she is "in shock" after *Wicked: For Good* received zero Oscar nominations.

- The actress said she thinks voters thought, "You already got so much with the first one, let other people have a chance."

- However, Yeoh thinks the movie is distinct from its predecessor, which received 10 nominations.

Michelle Yeoh is still reeling from *Wicked: For Good*'s disappointing Oscars performance.

The *Everything Everywhere All at Once* actress, who played Madame Morrible in Jon M. Chu's musical duology, couldn't believe that the fantasy sequel was completely shut out when the 2026 Academy Award nominations were announced in January.

"I'm not surprised. I am in shock! I really am," Yeoh told *Variety*. "I think sometimes the problem is that people think, 'Oh, you already got so much with the first one, let other people have a chance.' But then it feels like, 'No, come on!' It's such a beautiful, well-made movie."

The first *Wicked* movie scored a whopping 10 Oscar nominations and won the awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. Cynthia Erivo landed a nomination for Best Actress, and Ariana Grande was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. The film also earned nods for Best Picture, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Original Score.

Yeoh opined that *For Good* deserved at least a few nominations. "Paul [Tazewell] for costume design, hair and makeup," she suggested. "If you compare it [with contenders this year], it should be there. For Jon Chu, for [DP] Alice Brooks, for the set design."

The actress believes that *For Good* is distinct enough from the first *Wicked* to warrant additional recognition. "It's not the replica of the first one," Yeoh said. "It's more elaborate and there are many more new destinations in *Wicked: For Good*. So I was truly, truly very disappointed."

Elsewhere in the interview, Yeoh explained her hesitation in joining the *Wicked* saga after discussing it with Chu, whom she'd previously worked with on *Crazy Rich Asians*.

"You're talking about a film with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and there's singing involved," she said. "I was like, 'Jon, this Madame Morrible sings, right? And I don't sing.' That's the thing about taking risks, you know? And Jon, who's so charming, was like, 'Ah, it's a piece of cake!' And I think at the end of the day, you have to be willing to learn a new skill, basically."

Yeoh agreed to go outside her comfort zone to reteam with Chu. "They found me an amazing voice coach. And I learned so many things," she said. "Generally, I'm terrified of singing because I think I have a very husky low voice. I mean, in the mornings, when I call down for room service, there'll be 'Yes, Mr. Yeoh,' and I'm like, 'Dude, my dad is not here, OK?' They always mistake me for a guy."

The actress said she feels protective of Chu after making three films with him. "He's like my adopted son," she said. He's grown and matured into such an amazing director, and so working with him in *Wicked* *1* and *2* was a joy."**
