Michelle Williams revealed she suffered severe food poisoning after eating chicken nuggets left out for nine hours

She told the story to Sherri Shepherd before the daytime talk show host encouraged her to try nuggets again on camera

Michelle Williams had a close call.

While appearing on the Tuesday, March 3 episode of Sherri, the 46-year-old singer revealed she suffered from a severe case of food poisoning at the beginning of the year. The culprit? None other than chicken nuggets.

"You were supposed to be my first guest of 2026, but you had to cancel because you got sick," host Sherri Shepherd, 58, said.

"I got sick y'all!" Williams confirmed to the audience. When asked how she felt now, the former Destiny's Child member said that she felt "blessed to be alive," adding that Shepherd was "finna have a in-memorial segment on me."

"I ate some nuggets that was sitting out for over nine hours and I got food poisoning. It was almost Death Becomes Her for real," the actress, who's starring in the Broadway adaptation of the 1992 film, said.

"I had these nuggets on a two-show day," Williams explained. "I ordered them before the matinee started. I really just wanted the fries, because the potato and oil lubricate my vocal cords."

"Instead of putting the nuggets in the refrigerator. I put the nuggets in the microwave. The microwave sits on top of a radiator, so the heat was on. I don't know, it was just baking for the past nine hours," the Grammy award winner said, while Shepherd added that it was probably "all the bacteria."

"After the night show, I was so hungry. I took the nuggets with me cause I said I don't wanna waste the food and so I'm in the truck on the way home, and I say, 'Just eat, eat, eat them, eat them.'..and about four hours later, my life changed forever. It was bad."

Williams said that she had "learned my lesson" and that she has "not touched a nugget" since. "Once you get food poisoning from something, it's like I don't want to touch it."

However, Shepherd had a plan to change her mind. "You're one of the most resilient women that I know and I appreciate that about you and because you're so resilient, I wanted to give you a gift," the talk show host said.

"And the gift I want to give you, darling, because you're so resilient...is chicken nuggets," Shepherd continued, before presenting chicken nuggets served on a silver platter.

Williams screamed and shouted, "You tried it!"

While the audience chanted "Eat it! Eat it!" Williams, hesitantly, grabbed a nugget before shouting, "I'm not supposed to eat these!"

After taking a bite and Shepherd promising that they hadn't been warmed on a radiator but were "real, natural warm," Williams admitted, "Oh, these are good!"

Williams is currently starring as Viola Van Horn in Broadway's Death Becomes Her, based on the 1992 film starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn.

The musical received a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including two for Best Actress in a Musical for Jennifer Simard and Megan Hilty, which ultimately went to Sunset Blvd.'s Nicole Scherzinger.

Williams told Variety in May that not receiving a nomination, however, “stung a little bit." "But I was like, 'Girl, you’re back on Broadway after you didn’t think you ever would be. Who’s the winner? I’m still the winner!' That fixed me,” she told the outlet.

Williams was previously on Broadway in 2018 for the revival of Once on This Island, but exited the production after only two weeks on doctor's orders due to ongoing depression.

"I thought that door was closed for me to return on Broadway," she explained further to Good Morning America last February. "I thought I’d blew it. I thought I’d be seen as a liability. 'Can she maintain?' And six years later, I get a phone call, minding my business, saying, 'We want you to come to New York.' "
