Katherine Short had some parting words before leaving the world on Monday. The daughter of comedian Martin Short died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on February 23rd. It’s been a massive shock to the entire Short family, including the famed actor who lost his wife, Nancy Dolman, to cancer in 2010.
His daughter left behind a suicide note before killing herself. She dedicated her life to social work, obtaining a degree at NYU and a master’s from USC. Now, more mysterious details are being revealed in the hours leading up to her death.

Katherine’s state of mind leading up to her death is being questioned. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ that Katherine had not “been heard from in 24 hours.” It’s been revealed that she was found dead behind a locked door with a “note” nearby. Reports suggest that foul play has been ruled out.
Her disappearance seems rather unusual and out of character. One of her neighbors says that there was never any indication she had any mental health struggles. That said, she did deal with patients who surely had their share of issues surrounding that as a social worker. It was revealed on Thursday that Katherine successfully changed her last name to Hartley in 2013. This was out of fear that patients would harass her, given her famous name and her father’s identity.

Martin’s daughter, by all accounts, was a very private person, avoiding the limelight often. She apparently owned a service dog to help those dealing with mental problems in the years before her death.
In light of this tragedy, Martin’s upcoming comedy show with Steve Martin in Minneapolis was postponed. The last time we saw Katherine publicly was in 2023. She had previously been involved in a charity called Bring Change To Mind before her death. The group aims to break down mental health stigmas.
