Josh Duhamel didn’t expect Ransom Canyon to be canceled after its second season.

The actor said he was “a little upset” with Netflix for shuttering the Western romance despite its success.

Duhamel starred as rancher Staten Kirkland on the series.

Josh Duhamel wasn’t ready to say “so long, partner” toRansom Canyon.

The actor, who starred as rough-and-tumble cowboy Staten Kirkland on the Western series, revealed in a recent interview that he was stunned by Netflix’s decision to cancel the slow burn romance after just two seasons last month.

“I was pretty surprised, if I’m being honest,” Duhamel told Us Magazine. “I thought [it was safe] because the show was No. 1 for almost two weeks and the numbers looked really, really good and people really loved the show.”

It’s why the 53-year-old was especially saddened to see Ransom Canyon not be greenlit for a third season.

“I was a little upset with Netflix for not giving the audience another season, because people really did love the show
but that’s the business,” Duhamel confessed. “At the same time, I get it. They have their reasons for why things stay and why things go. I don’t always understand those reasons, but it’s not my job to question.”

He added, “I’ve just gotta move on. I just feel bad for the fans who are really invested in it, and that’s it, unfortunately.”

Based on author Jodi Thomas’ celebrated novels, Ransom Canyon detailed the complicated relationship between the stern Staten (Duhamel), a rancher fighting to keep his land, and free-spirited lavender farmer Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly). The series also starred Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing, Jack Schumacher, Casey W. Johnson, and more.

Duhamel told Us that he “really loved playing” Staten, noting that the role was “in my wheelhouse, because I remember when I first got the job, I was actually out of my cabin,” adding, “Which isn’t a ranch, but I’m always doing ranch-y type things.”

It’s why he so deeply connected with his character — and why he’d be down to play another cowboy in a future project, too.

“I was already in that mindset and I kind of lived that life anyway,” Duhamel said. “So there’s something about it, I just really felt comfortable in that role. So the answer is yes, I would love to do more stuff like that. There’s a couple of things in the works that I may do, but those are too far off to talk about yet.”

Duhamel isn’t the only one mourning the loss of Ransom Canyon. Kelly also posted a heartfelt tribute to the series on her Instagram account last month, writing, in part, “All good things come to an end. And so it is. Thank you all for giving us two beautiful seasons! I love you forever my Ransom Canyon family!!”

Series showrunner April Blair previously told Entertainment Weekly that a third season of Ransom Canyon would’ve focused on how Staten and Quinn faced problems together as a couple.

“I always say the end of season two isn’t the end of their story. It’s actually just the beginning,” she said at the time. “Falling in love and deciding to be together is the easy part. What happens after that? How do you keep that love alive? What are those other hurdles? What are the things you didn’t know about that person? Like really, truly knowing someone and living with them and building a life with them is the real big adventure.”

Blair continued, “So it took two seasons for them to end up together, but they still have a lot of hurdles and fun to come, but they’ll be facing them together instead of separate.”
