John Stamos speaks to PEOPLE at the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere of the movie Drag

The horror-comedy from Raviv Ullman and Greg Yagolnitzer stars Lucy DeVito and is produced by Lucy, her brother Jake and their father Danny

“I've been a Danny DeVito fan my whole life, and I've always wanted to just meet him and to get to work with him,” Stamos tells PEOPLE at the premiere

John Stamos has nothing but reverence for Danny DeVito.

“I've always gravitated towards older gentlemen in my career and mentors,” Stamos, 62, tells PEOPLE at the Friday, March 13 SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere of his new movie Drag, produced by the legendary Danny, 81. “I hope that he becomes one, you know?” he adds.

Horror-comedy Drag, from writer-directors Raviv Ullman and Greg Yagolnitzer, is a passion project for Danny and two of his three children, Lucy and Jake, who all serve as producers.

Starring Lucy DeVito, Lizzy Caplan, Christine Ko and Stamos, it tells the story of two sisters whose robbery of an upstate New York home “turns into a nightmare when one of them throws out her back and becomes immobilized on the second floor,” per a SXSW synopsis. “The night spirals out of control as they embark on a painful journey to make it out before the homeowner returns.”

“I've been a Danny DeVito fan my whole life, and I've always wanted to just meet him and to get to work with him,” Stamos tells PEOPLE alongside the DeVito family at the premiere.

One memorable interaction with the longtime star involved Stamos getting a call from Danny moments before going on stage to perform with The Beach Boys. “I go, 'What do you want?' " the Full House star recalls. "He goes, ‘I want to show your butt in the movie.’ I said, ‘OK.’ ”

Drag enabled the Full House alum to stretch himself as an actor. “It does become very dark in this movie. I watched a lot of true crime. And I really wanted to change my look,” he says, adding that his darker contacts and thinner eyebrows “really freaked my wife out.”

Following his appearance on The Hunting Wives, “which is a pretty dark, wild show as well,” continues Stamos, he’s “sticking with” similar projects. “Maybe no more Hallmark movies!”

Despite the tricky tone of Drag, he adds, “I thought they did that really incredibly. And then watching Lucy and Danny and Jake work together was a beautiful experience.”
