- J.K. Simmons was reunited with Spider-Man on Tuesday night.
- The actor and the masked webslinger sat next to each other at the New York Mets game.
- Simmons has appeared in six Spider-Man movies as J. Jonah Jameson.
J.K. Simmons can't avoid that menace known as Spider-Man.
The Oscar winner has appeared in six *Spider-Man** *films as *Daily Bugle* editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson, beginning with 2002's *Spider-Man*. Jameson's beef with the masked webslinger continued on Tuesday night at Citi Field, where the New York Mets hosted the Cincinnati Reds.
When shown on the big screen, Simmons soon realized that Spider-Man was sitting behind him, reading an issue of the *Daily Bugle*. The actor then gave arguably his best performance since *Whiplash*.
Being cast as Jameson was a game-changing moment in Simmons' career, but he was no shoo-in for the role, even though he'd already worked with *Spider-Man* director Sam Raimi twice — including appearing in 1999's* For Love of the Game* as the manager of his beloved Detroit Tigers. He was asked to do an "old-school, classic camera test" as Jameson to win over skeptical executives.
"It was nerve-wracking," he said in 2020. "The producers and the people at Sony, they needed to be convinced, because, obviously, there were a lot of much more high-profile actors that they had in mind that would help with the box office."

Simmons' meeting with Spider-Man was the latest pop culture reunion staged at Mets Stadium. Earlier this month, Tom Hanks was approached by the Mets beloved mascot, Mr. Met, dressed up as Wilson the volleyball, the lone companion to Hanks' character in the 2000 survival drama *Cast Away*.
All respect to Hanks and Simmons, who are legitimate baseball fans, but, like we did with Hanks, we must call out their sports-team bigamy. Despite having long allegiances to their hometown teams, both men rocked Mets gear at the games. And Simmons doesn't have the excuse Hanks does of his squad moving cities! After this, there's no way Simmons can go home.
