Key Takeaways

Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford are selling their estate, originally built in 1911 for silent film star Dustin Farnum

The 10,199-square-foot property includes three residences, a swimming pool, gardens, and panoramic views of Los Angeles

The couple first listed the house for $18.5 million in 2021, before lowering the price to $17 million two years later

After 30 years of living in their Hollywood Hills home, Helen Mirren and husband Taylor Hackford have re-listed it for $12 million. This is the first house the Academy Award-winning actress and acclaimed director, who have been married for 29 years, lived in together, the actress told the Wall Street Journal in 2021.

Mirren and Hackford first listed their estate in July 2021 for $18.5 million. Then nearly two years later, the couple re-listed the property for just under $17 million. Now, their gated, 10,199-square-foot compound on 6.5 private acres is re-listed exclusively with Jonas Heller and Kurt Rappaport of Westside Estate Agency.

The 7-bedroom, 8.5-bath estate is significant for several reasons beyond its beauty and historic value. It was originally built in 1911 for silent film star Dustin Farnum and has only had a few distinguished and high-profile owners during the past century, including film producer-journalist Mark Hellinger and actress-producer Gail Patrick, executive producer of the original and long-running Perry Mason television series starring Raymond Burr.

“This is truly a rare opportunity to acquire one of Hollywood Hills’ most historically significant and private estates,” says Heller. “Properties of this caliber, with such a rich legacy and expansive coverage, seldom become available.”

Mirren, whose film A Talent for Murder is scheduled for a fall release, acquired the estate with Hackford in the 1980s. They spent decades preserving and restoring it while carefully maintaining its Old Hollywood charm, character, and architectural integrity.

Set behind two private gates, a dramatic quarter-mile drive winds through the landscaping leading to three separate residences overlooking the Los Angeles skyline and Downtown.

Following a series of updates, including major enhancements to the landscaping, Vesta Home designed and staged the interior to celebrate the estate’s historic character while showcasing how it works today for the modern buyer. Residents can entertain grandly or enjoy easy living with an eye toward the outdoors.

“Every house tells you what it wants to be, and this one didn’t need a lot of noise,” says Brett Baer,  co-founder of Vesta Home. “It already had incredible character, so our job was really to layer in the right places and let the house speak for itself.”

He adds: “We wanted people to walk in and feel like it always looked this way. Nothing feels forced, and every antique, Old Hollywood reference and furnishing was chosen to support the home instead of competing with it.”

This carefully edited approach, paired with Vesta’s iron outdoor furniture, creates a fresh perspective that feels elegant, timeless, and true to the home’s iconic legacy.

The primary residence has about 6,700 square feet, four upstairs bedrooms, expansive living spaces, and a perfect layout for indoor-outdoor California living. A separate 3,100-square-foot guest residence features two bedrooms, lots of natural light, a private patio, and an enclosed yard. And a second 500-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment above the garage is perfect for guests or staff.

The sophisticated and secluded compound includes charming walking paths, a swimming pool, large terraces, gardens, and the newly landscaped grounds framed by mature trees and panoramic views close to the Sunset Strip and West Hollywood.
