Ford surged 2% and GM gained as investors rotated out of AI tech, with Ford beating Q2 EPS estimates and raising its full-year EBIT guidance to a range of $10 billion to $11 billion.

XLY and SPY each fell 1% as their heavy tech weightings amplified outflows, while Ford and GM moved opposite both funds.

Ford's $919 million EV unit loss and Q3 results due October 28 will test whether its truck-driven rally and raised guidance hold.

Money rotating out of AI-linked technology names and into businesses tied to everyday consumer demand is lifting Ford Motor (NYSE:F) stock. Ford shares are up 2% to $12.54 in afternoon trading. Meanwhile, General Motors (NYSE:GM) stock is following Ford higher, up 0.7% to $84.21.

Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) stock is lagging both, up 0.35% to $4.37. The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEARCA:XLY) is down 1% and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is also down 1%. So, why are Ford stock and GM shares moving opposite these two benchmark funds?

Money Rotates From Tech Into Ford

Ford's recent results give the trade something concrete to lean on. In its Q2 2026 report, the car maker posted adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.42, beating the $0.35 consensus estimate.

Ford's sales also came in ahead of expectations. Its $48.3 billion in revenue exceeded the $45.8 billion estimate.

Management raised Ford's full-year 2026 adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) guidance to $10 billion to $11 billion, up from $8.5 billion to $10.5 billion. Chief executive Jim Farley stated, "We delivered another strong quarter and raised our full-year guidance, but the more important story is the growing evidence that Ford is becoming a more profitable, more disciplined and genuinely different company."

Trucks and Off-Road Trims Carry Ford

F Earnings Explorer — 24/7 Wall St.

Off-road trims make up nearly a quarter of Ford's U.S. sales, and the company mentions strong pricing power in U.S. trucks. Executive Andrew Frick asserted on the earnings call, "The overall truck demand right now across from Maverick all the way up to Super Duty is really strong."

Ford's segment results back that up, with its gas and hybrid unit, Ford Blue, posting $26.1 billion in Q2 revenue, up 1%. Its commercial arm, Ford Pro, brought in $17.8 billion, down 5%.

GM similarly makes most of its profit from North American trucks and SUVs through its Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands. Stellantis sells Jeep, Ram and a range of European brands, including Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Fiat, and it's pushing small affordable EVs for a European comeback.

A quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share gives Ford stock an income angle during a defensive shift. Even after its rise, Ford stock is down 1% year to date (YTD), compared with a 4% gain for GM shares and a 60% drop for Stellantis stock.

Funds Slide as Ford and GM Climb

Ford accounts for 1.4% of the XLY ETF's net assets and GM accounts for 1.7%, based on the fund's June 30 filing. That makes XLY a broad consumer gauge with only a small auto piece.

The SPY ETF's decline points to broad large-cap pressure. The fund's biggest components are led by technology and communications companies, according to its March 17 fact sheet, tying SPY closely to the group money is leaving. Stellantis stock stands between the two camps, inching higher while both funds fall.

Ford's Rally Faces an Earnings Test

The bull case for Ford rests on its truck and SUV franchise drawing buyers looking for shelter outside technology, while a bear case holds that the rotation could reverse if money flows back into AI names. Losses at Ford's Model e electric vehicle unit add to that risk, with the segment posting a $919 million EBIT loss in Q2.

Ford's Q3 2026 earnings report, expected October 28 after the close, could show whether truck pricing and the raised guidance hold up. GM is expected to report its third-quarter results on October 20.

Both Ford stock and GM shares are on the right side of the split for now. Still, position sizes are best kept modest as the rotation out of technology could reverse at any given moment.
