Eric Dane’s posthumous memoir, My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, will be released on November 3.

In a new excerpt published by People, the late actor recalled a harrowing moment with his daughter.

Dane died on February 19 following his battle with ALS.

In Eric Dane’s posthumous memoir My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, out on November 3, the late actor recalled a moment when his daughter Georgia, 14, saved him from drowning amid his ALS battle.

According to a book excerpt published by People, Dane had to be saved by Georgia and her friend while they were on vacation in Mexico following his 2024 diagnosis after he noticed that he couldn’t swim. He then called his wife, Rebecca Gayheart. “Georgia hands me my phone. ‘What happened?’ Rebecca says. ‘I can’t swim, Rebecca,’ I say. ‘I can’t swim.’”

The Euphoria actor continued, “She explodes into tears and I weep with her. We cry together. Finally, the tears slow, become reduced to gasps, and when we’re both cried out, Rebecca says, ‘I was afraid of this day. I knew it would come. I’ve been dreading it.’”

Dane died on February 19 following his battle with ALS. At the time, his family issued a statement to People about his passing.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

Elsewhere in the book excerpt, the Grey’s Anatomy star wrote about when he first began to notice that something about his health was off.

“I’m eating sushi with my kids and suddenly I can’t work the chopsticks with my right hand,” he wrote. “My hand tingles, and then my fingers feel numb. Some kind of weird nerve thing, I think. I shake it off. I’m probably texting too much. Three weeks later, it happens again, only worse. I can’t grip the chopsticks at all.”

Through it all, his wife stayed by his side, and he wrote about their special bond in the book. In addition to Georgia, the couple shares a 16-year-old daughter named Billie.

“We were married for 14 years, grew apart, filed for divorce, but never got around to signing the papers,” he wrote. “We’ve since stayed close, co-parenting, going on vacations as a family, spending time together and now we talk every day.”

Dane added, “Through it all, Rebecca not only shows up, she remains my best friend,” he wrote. “She drops by every day, early in the morning, late at night, sometimes in the middle of the night when she knows I won’t be sleeping. She’s the person I call, the one I go to when I need to talk, when I need to scream, when I need to cry.”
