Emma Chamberlain attended the Academy Museum Gala on Saturday, October 17.

Her hairstylist, Sami Knight, gave Byrdie the inside scoop on her old Hollywood curled pixie cut.

Emma Chamberlain is newly brunette and stylish as ever. Though the platinum pixie she’d been rocking the last couple years sure was cute, her current look has already shown its promise everywhere from the tiny rollneck sweater-verse to the red carpet.

On Saturday, October 17, Chamberlain attended the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles alongside a strong lineup of other A-listers. But before that? She was in glam! Somewhere in Hollywood, magic was taking place with celebrity hairstylist Sami Knight—and the professional was kind enough to tell us all about it.

As you might imagine, the duo definitely chatted through references before styling took place.

ā€œWe spoke about a modern twist on old Hollywood glamour. Betty Boop meets Elizabeth Taylor, but kind of a little lived in, and tousled,ā€ Knight tells Byrdie. ā€œI always want my girls to just feel the very best version of themselves; I think we definitely did that tonight. Red carpets are a lot of fun, but it’s no small feat. Perfect glam, suited to the occasion and look is your armor for the red carpet walk.ā€

With her blue eyes popping beneath a feathery dose of top and bottom mascara and lips painted a pretty muted cinnamon shade, Chamberlain’s look was topped off with a head of dark, tousled, and ultra-short curls that ended in swoops and loops across her forehead.

She paired the brunette curls (colorist Matt Rez darkened her platinum pixie earlier this year) with a custom red Giorgio Armani gown.

How to Get the Look

Knight used a lineup of Bumble and Bumble products to perfect Chamberlain’s pixie.

ā€œI just love working with Bumble and Bumble products, they have such an inclusive line, whatever texture, shine, hold, or undone-ness you want to achieve, there’s a product to take you there,ā€ he explains. ā€œMy key products tonight were the Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil and Invisible Oil Primer. Perfect for shine, hydration, and nourishment, plus heat protection, an essential when using hot tools.ā€

As far as copying it at home, the stylist’s top tip is ā€œto try and coax as much natural movement/texture out of the hair as possible before actually using any heat styling.ā€

ā€œThe more you can do naturally, the better, and more effortless the finished look will be,ā€ he notes.

And if you’re heading out for a big night, make sure the style is fully secure. Before Chamberlain headed out the door, Knight gave her hair a solid spritz of Strong Finish hairspray.

ā€œIt’s very important to me that Emma is looking as stunning at the end of the party, as she does when she enters,ā€ says Knight. ā€œBumble and bumble Strong Finish firm hold hairspray was perfect for that. She’ll be having breakfast with that hair tomorrow morning.ā€
