Lanterns episode 5 may have just dropped its biggest villain hint yet, and fans are losing it. A striking new visual detail in the latest teaser fuels growing theories about a major DC Comics antagonist potentially making their debut in the show.

HBO’s Lanterns episode 5 teaser drops a striking visual that strengthens existing Atrocitus theories. The brief footage shows a drop of blood falling directly onto John Stewart’s eye. The substance then spreads across his eye, suggesting possible corruption or influence over the trainee Green Lantern.
This imagery carries significant weight given Atrocitus’ well-documented comic book history with blood rituals. In DC Comics, Atrocitus used shamanistic magic and blood rituals to forge the Red Lantern rings. He also performed rituals to divine the location of key figures like William Hand.
The show already established a clear connection through the character Antaan, played by Paul Ben-Victor. Antaan leads an alien hit squad and reveals that rogue Manhunters caused the near-genocide of his people. He and his fellow survivors now seek vengeance against those responsible for the massacre.

This origin closely mirrors Atrocitus’ backstory in the comics. The rogue Manhunters rampaged through Space Sector 666 and nearly destroyed all life there. Atrocitus survived but witnessed the death of his wife and children during the attack. He then formed a terrorist group called the Five Inversions to destroy the Guardians of the Universe.
The show adds another parallel through the Manhunter connection to Abin Sur’s crash on Earth. In the comics, Atrocitus mortally wounded Abin Sur after breaking free from his energy restraints. However, the DCU version suggests the Manhunter caused Abin Sur’s crash instead.
Episode 5 promises escalation as Antaan’s hit squad arrives in Rushville searching for the Manhunter. Zoe Macon’s confirmed Manhunter identity from episode 4 raises the stakes considerably. The blood imagery in the teaser could signal Antaan attempting to unleash uncontrollable rage within John Stewart.
