Christina Applegate was “madly in love” with Johnny Depp, she reveals in her new memoir, You With the Sad Eyes
The book contains journal entries from throughout the actress’ life, including one from her teenage years about Depp
“I’ve been having really strange dreams about Johnny of all people… I wish I could get through to him,” Applegate wrote at the time
Christina Applegate is revealing a starry childhood crush — and she has the receipts to prove it.
In her new memoir You With the Sad Eyes, out now, the actress, 54, recalls the ups and downs of early life in Hollywood and her 2021 multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis.
“In my closet there is a locked box of all my journals from the age of 13 to the time I stopped wanting to write,” says Applegate early in the book. “Lucky you — the box is open.”
Johnny Depp, it turns out, was the subject of many of Applegate’s early journal entries. At age 15 she “was madly in love” with Depp, she writes, recalling booking a guest spot in 1987 on Depp’s breakout series 21 Jump Street.

Depp, now 62, “was part of my friend group growing up, a group that included my still‑best friend, Sam Sarkar,” explains the Dead to Me star. Her words from that era make it “very clear,” she says, that she “was in love with Johnny Depp for years… my journals are filled with complicated and ever-changing feelings.”

One such journal entry Applegate includes reads as follows: “I’ve been having really strange dreams about Johnny of all people. I can’t really analyze them because I don’t remember what they are once I wake up. I can only remember who’s in them ... Johnny.”
The teenaged actress continued: “I can’t sit here and wish he was something that he’s not. I can’t change him. But yet I wish I could get through to him.”
Depp appears again in You With the Sad Eyes, when he would invite Applegate “up to Vancouver to hang out” amid filming 21 Jump Street, she recalls in the book. “There are lots of entries about my trips to Canada in my journals; mostly, I loved it up there with the guys.”

Applegate hosts the podcast MeSsy along with friend and fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also has MS. The Married... with Children alum is launching a new online platform, Next in MS, where others can share their own experiences living with the disease.
