A flight attendant who has worked in the industry for more than six decades was met with a huge crowd to celebrate her final flight and retirement earlier this week.

The milestone flight marked the official retirement for 83-year-old Carol Fair, American Airlines’ most senior flight attendant who served in the industry for over 63 years, according to local outlets, WCNC and WWNY.Ā On Monday, Oct. 26, Fair embarked on her last flight aboard American Airlines 733 from London to Charlotte, N.C., marking the end of a career that she first started at just 19 years old.

ā€œIt was amazing, just amazing,ā€ Fair told WCNC. ā€œI never dreamed a little girl from East Tennessee, 19 years old, [would be here] today.ā€

Ahead of her last journey, Fair reflected on her incredible career in an interview with Forbes and shared how the flight paid tribute to another memorable moment she experienced earlier in her career.

Fair first started out as a Piedmont Airlines flight attendant in 1963, after first being turned down by American Airlines because she ā€œwasn’t American material,ā€ she recalled to the outlet in an interview published on Oct. 21. The original Piedmont Airlines eventually became part of American Airlines after a series of corporate mergers over the last few decades.

Back in 1987, Fair was one of the crew members who worked Piedmont Airlines’ inaugural flight from Charlotte to London in the early days of the U.S. destination becoming a bustling airline hub.

Fair embarked on the flight path once more during her final journey, marking her retirement at the top of Americans’ seniority list among 30,000 flight attendants, per the outlet.

Recalling that inaugural flight from Charlotte to London, Fair remembered how it represented a shift in her career from working on smaller aircraft to larger Boeing planes.

ā€œI was so excited, I didn’t sleep the night before,ā€ she added of the career moment. ā€œI went from a DC-3 to a 767. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.ā€

Of her decision to retire at 83, Fair told the outlet: ā€œIt’s time. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I made No. 1 out of 30,000. You can’t go any higher, so I might as well hang it up.ā€
