Anne Hathaway speaks to PEOPLE exclusively at the April 22 European premiere of her new movie The Devil Wears Prada 2

She and Andy Sachs, the Devil Wears Prada character she’s reprising, are “both more confident” 20 years later, she shares

In the sequel, Andy “wants to be herself,” Hathaway says, “and I relate to that”

Anne Hathaway has come a long way — just like her The Devil Wears Prada character.

PEOPLE's 2026 World's Most Beautiful cover star makes a long-awaited return to the role of Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada 2 (in theaters May 1), reuniting her with costars Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci 20 years after the original hit comedy.

At the sequel’s European premiere in London on Wednesday, April 22, Hathaway reflects on how her own evolution has mirrored Andy’s. “I think we're both more confident,” she tells PEOPLE on the red carpet.

“I think that 20 years ago Andy Sachs was really worried about getting it right and she really wanted to please her boss,” says the Oscar winner.

“And now,” the mother of two adds, “I think that she wants to be herself. And I relate to that.”

Director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna also return for the follow-up to 2006’s adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's novel The Devil Wears Prada. The sequel sees Hathaway’s journalist Andy and Streep’s fashion editor Miranda Priestly reuniting amid changes in the modern fashion and journalism worlds.

The movie, of course, features plenty of chic looks for Hathaway and her costars. Asked for a personal highlight at the UK premiere, the actress tells outlets that her favorite was unfortunately cut from the film.

“I think it was a Phoebe Philo t-shirt, train thing,” she recalls. “It was a garment more than anything else, but I loved it so much.” Upon hearing her scene featuring that costume didn’t make the final cut, Hathaway adds, “I was like, ‘Well, maybe it was good that the paparazzi were there.’”

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in theaters May 1. Joining its returning cast members are newcomers Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Pauline Chalamet, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen and Conrad Ricamora.

Hathaway also stars in four other movies in 2026: Mother Mary, The Odyssey, Verity and The End of Oak Street.
